MY 100 FAVORITE SONGS

91. I WHUPPED BATMAN’S ASS, WESLEY WILLIS

I passed up a chance to see one of Wesley Willis’ final concerts before he passed on. I was a sophomore in college, and I ended up failing that final for which I had to study. I never forgave myself.

Mr. Willis was a 400 lb., sometimes homeless, schizophrenic musician who wrote and composed songs, sometimes with his band The Dragnews, in order to fight the demons in his head, as he often put it. Most of the songs were simplistic, derived from the same four or five generic Casio presets. Frequently, he wrote fantasies of absurd delirium, and a number of them involved defeating various superheroes in conflict. My favorite was this one, where he genuinely sounds sad to be beating up Batman.

The video is fanmade, featuring the physical presence of one Killer Croc. Rock over London, rock on Chicago.
